Embracing Career Change at 50: Miriam’s Journey to Self-Employment

A career change into self-employment at 50 is no small feat, but Miriam’s inspiring journey proves it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. Having built a successful career with various prestigious institutions, including the European Union, Miriam recently took the bold step into self-employment, sharing her experiences in a session aimed at empowering other women contemplating similar changes.

Uncertainty is a natural part of the journey

Miriam opened the session with a powerful question: “Why are you here?” This prompted attendees to reflect on their motivations and expectations for career changes, acknowledging that these transitions vary significantly across different age groups. Miriam candidly admitted she is still a work in progress, figuring out her path, which resonated deeply with the audience. Her honesty served as a beacon of inspiration, showing that uncertainty is a natural part of the journey.

Central to Miriam’s message was the concept of self-leadership—actively developing self-awareness and confidence. She emphasised the importance of being intentional about one’s decisions and recognising when you’re out of alignment with your work. For her, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a sense of disconnection and dissatisfaction, which many could relate to.

Recognising the uncertainty that accompanies major life changes, Miriam stressed the importance of having a support system. Especially for those with additional responsibilities, like single mothers, she highlighted the necessity of careful planning. Miriam shared that securing her financial stability a year in advance provided her with a crucial safety net.

Driven by a sense of purpose rather than external pressures

Miriam also underscored the importance of a clear mindset and the need to dismantle limiting beliefs. She encouraged choosing a path aligned with one’s strengths and passions, driven by a deep sense of purpose rather than external pressures. This approach ensures that the new career is fulfilling and personally meaningful.

For those looking to delve deeper, Miriam recommended reading “Why Midlife Women Are Walking Out” by Lucy Ryan and a poem by Suzanne Avarell, both of which resonate with the themes of self-discovery and empowerment.

Miriam’s journey is a testament to the power of intention, preparation, and self-belief in navigating career changes at any age. Her story encourages women everywhere to embrace their paths with confidence and clarity.
