Migrant Women Talk: Tara Miran

Group of women sitting in a circle for a talk

by Faith Barorot, Bristol Women’s Voice Community Development Worker

On the evening of Monday 2 December 2024, Bristol Women’s Voice hosted an inspiring session for our Migrant Women Series at St Pauls Learning Centre.

The event was led by the incredible Tara Miran, a community leader, advocate, and proud Kurdish woman. The evening brought together women from across Bristol to explore themes of inclusion, allyship, and the power of shared experiences.

A Journey of Resilience and Strength

Tara began the evening by sharing her story, her identity as a first-generation migrant child, her Kurdish heritage, and the strength she draws from the ethos of “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Women, Life, Freedom), a core principle of the Kurdish Feminist Liberation Movement. She painted a vivid picture of Kurdistan, a region rich in history and culture yet marked by over a century of conflict, displacement, and perseverance. Tara’s reflections highlighted how the struggles and triumphs of her community have shaped her values and career.

Women in Kurdistan: A Legacy of Resistance

One of the most powerful segments of the evening was Tara’s discussion on the role of women in Kurdish history and society. From the all-female Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) that resisted ISIS, to the progressive inclusion of women in Kurdish government leadership, Tara illustrated how Kurdish women have continuously defied societal norms to fight for equality, freedom, and justice.

Global and mainstream feminist spaces, narratives, and discussions must include the voices of Kurdish feminists and their contributions to feminism. Too often, their experiences and lived realities are overlooked. For a truer and more inclusive understanding of feminism—and to learn from the Kurdish feminist movement—these voices must be amplified and centered. Tara emphasized the need to recognize Kurdish women’s activism and courage as vital elements in global feminist discourse.

Building Inclusive Communities in Bristol

Drawing on her extensive experience in community organising and engagement, Tara shared insights on creating inclusive spaces through an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. She encouraged attendees to shift their focus from deficits to strengths, emphasising the importance of recognising and mobilising the unique talents, passions, and skills within different communities.

Tara also highlighted the vibrant contributions of the Kurdish community in Bristol, from cultural associations to grassroots initiatives such as the St Pauls Community Garden and the Green Melon Social Enterprise Business. Her examples showcased the creativity, resilience, and hospitality that define her community.

The Power of Allyship

A central theme of the evening was allyship, what it means, why it matters, and how to be an effective ally. Tara urged attendees to reflect on their privilege, stay curious and proactive, and commit to lifelong learning and advocacy.

Through the interactive “5 H’s” activity, participants explored the gifts they could offer—of the head (knowledge), heart (passion), hand (skills), heel (grounding), and human connection.

Attendees were encouraged to make allyship pledges, committing to actions that support marginalised communities, particularly Kurdish people. Tara reminded everyone that allyship is not a one-time act but a sustained effort to challenge inequalities and foster meaningful change.

Takeaways and Next Steps

Tara Miran’s session was a reminder of the strength found in shared stories and the importance of standing together in solidarity. From learning about the history and resilience of Kurdistan to understanding practical tools for community engagement and allyship, participants left inspired and equipped to make a difference.

For those looking to support the Kurdish community in Bristol, Tara shared resources and ways to get involved, including the Bristol Kurdish Community Association, Bristol Kurdish Solidarity Network and Aynda Group.
