Review: Hansel & Gretel

by Claire Charras, Communications Coordinator

If you are looking for a special family treat this festive season, the Tobacco Factory Theatres and New International Encounters co-production of Hansel and Gretel could be just the thing!

A modern and laugh-out-loud twist on a fairy tale classic

The classic Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale could quickly turn into something a little dark for a Christmas show but not for this [in]genious group of people!

As we walk into the theatre, we are immediately transported into a cold dark forest, far far away. The play opens to the sound of live, Balkan-Folk–inspired music played by the actors but do not be fooled, this is not a musical.

We follow the story of Hansel & Gretel (played by Abayomi Oniyede and Stephanie Muller), their starving and slightly delirious parents (Martin Bonger and Joey Hickman) and of course, Lady (we all voted for her to be a witch really) (played by Samantha Suntherland). We are taken to magical places where the audience, young and old, find themselves laughing for two hours.

A play for all ages

This is a modern take on the story playfully weaves in contemporary realities (same-sex parenthood! the patriarchy! junk food!) and is truly for all ages.

We left the theatre with a sense of warmth and gratitude for having shared this time together – and this is what this festive season is really about, isn’t it?

Hansel & Gretel is at Tobacco Factory Theatres on November 28-January 19 at 7pm, with lots of additional 2pm matinee shows. Tickets are available at www.tobaccofactorytheatres.com.

Tickets start at £12 (concession).
